One thing which makes all
the Hawaiian Islands such a wonderful place is their almost perfect
weather all year around. The town of Kihei is no exception to
this rule. Kihei is located on the leeward side of the island
which is the more dry and hotter side of the island, which is a good
thing unless you want it to be raining almost every day of the year!
To understand the weather
on Maui you have to first become accustomed with the topography of the
island. There are two sides of the island separated by the
extinct volcanoes which made the island, the leeward side and the
windward side. The windward side of the island is on the side of
the mountains where moist ocean air is blown inland from the trade
winds. The trade winds blow inland from the northeast. The
windward side is the side of Maui which usually rains all year around
and contains the rainforests, and is in general the north and east
side of the mountain. The leeward side of Maui is in a rain
shadow and the mountain usually stop the moist ocean air and rain
clouds blown inland from the trade winds from dumping rain on this
side of the island. The leeward side in general is on the west
and south side of the mountain. This side contains the wonderful
sunny, tropical climate many vacationers come to experience while in
Maui.
Most of the hotels and
resorts are located in the leeward side of Maui, and this includes the
town of Kihei! The closer your located to the windward side of
the island the more rain you will experience during your stay. |
